NASL Best XI Dutch striker lands in New York.
The New York Cosmos announced Thursday that Dutch forward Hans Denissen has signed a contract to join the club for the 2014 North American Soccer League campaign. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“I’m so excited to be joining the New York Cosmos,” Denissen said. “This is a club not only with a great history, but a great future, too. Having played against the Cosmos last season, I know this is a team that prides itself on playing an attractive style of attacking soccer. I’m really looking forward to joining this group.”
Denissen, 29, was an everyday starter at forward for the San Antonio Scorpions during the 2013 season. During the regular season, he made 25 appearances and was named to the NASL Best XI.
The Dutchman scored 12 goals in 2013, tripling his tally from 2012. Denissen was named to the NASL Team of the Week seven times during the course of the year and was named NASL Player of the Month for June/July.
“Hans will be a great addition to our forward line next season,” Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese said. “He is a very dynamic and smart player who will provide a different dimension to our team. We are excited to include another great professional on our club.”
Denissen, a native of Tilburg, Netherlands, signed with the Scorpions and moved stateside in 2012. He scored four goals in 25 appearances during his first season in the NASL.
Before coming to the United States, Denissen spent nine years playing in Europe. His professional career began in 2003 when he joined his local club, Willem II Tilburg, at 19 years old. Over the first three years of his career, Denissen scored four goals in 26 appearances for the Tricolores.
From 2006 to 2008, he played with Dutch second division clubs RBC Roosendaal and MVV, scoring four goals in 34 combined appearances between the two teams. After spending parts of 2008 and 2009 with Cypriot club Ayia Napa and Finnish club FC Haka, Denissen returned to his home country to play for Emmen and Willem II, scoring 13 goals between the two clubs.
