SUNDAY, JUNE 21 | COSMOS B 2, NEW YORK ATHLETIC CLUB 1

Venue: Travers Island at New York Athletic Club

The Cosmos B team's four-game road stretch continued on Sunday with a match against New York Athletic Club at Travers Island. The Cosmos entered the game unbeaten, taking 16 points from their six games played.  Their undefeated season has seen several players shine, such as Ruben Bover, Cristhian Hernandez and Julian Stahler.

New York Athletic Club entered the match sitting mid-table, with 14 points out of eight matches. When the two teams met earlier in the season at Shuart Stadium, the Cosmos triumphed 1-0, with Hernandez's sixth-minute free kick the difference between the two teams.

The match at Travers Island began swiftly for the visitors, with Hernandez seeking out Miguel Herlein with a through ball. The NYAC goalkeeper kicked it away, but the Cosmos continued to press forward.

NYAC had their chances as well, but Cosmos goalkeeper Kyle Zobeck was up to the task. The 25-year-old also got help from his defense in the 15th minute, when captain John Neeskens saved the ball on the goal line to keep the game scoreless.

In the 26th minute the Cosmos began to take control of the match, with some first team players leaving their marks on the game. Hagop Chirishian pulled the strings in the midfield, which led to several chances for his team.

The Cosmos broke the deadlock in the 28th minute, with Stahler once again finding the back of the net. Jimmy Mulligan played a low cross into the box, and Stahler tapped it in to get the Cosmos on the board.

The chances continued and the Cosmos quickly doubled their score in the 32nd minute thanks to Bover. The 22-year-old chipped the ball over the goalkeeper from 20 yards out. This brilliant goal put the Cosmos in good shape, and they took the lead into halftime.

Bover was playing for Cosmos B after cracking the first team 18 for the first time on June 13. He came on as a late sub in the Cosmos' 3-3 home draw against Jacksonville Armada FC.

The two sides (and spectators at the match) were treated to a halftime downpour that lingered as the second half began. NYAC began to push forward in the wet conditions, but the Cosmos defense put in a good performance.

In the 71st minute, NYAC’s Leonardo Gomez received a red card for a two-footed challenge. But going down a man didn't stop the home team from pulling one back. Just seven minutes later, NYAC pounced on a rebound and scored, despite a strong initial save from Brian Holt.

However, one goal is all they would get. When the final whistle blew, Cosmos B stayed unbeaten in their inaugural NPSL campaign and on top of the table. The 2-1 victory over New York Athletic Club showcased their physicality and ability to overcome the conditions. The team is now unbeaten in seven matches.

Next up for Cosmos B is another road fixture - this time against the Rhode Island Reds at Brown University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, June 27.
