Szetela Named Emirates Man of the Match

The Polish-American midfielder scored his first goal of the year, leading the Cosmos to victory in their first match against expansion side Rayo OKC.

Making his second start of the season, Danny Szetela shined as the New York Cosmos' holding midfielder on Saturday night. The New Jersey native deterred a powerful bunch of Rayo OKC attackers while successfully executing all but five of his 67 passes, a 93 percent completion rate.

But Szetela went above and beyond his positional duties as well, tapping home the match-winning goal in the 54th minute. As the Cosmos strung together passes up the right side of the field, the 28-year-old Szetela made a ceaseless run from his midfield position into the heart of the penalty area. Sebastián Guenzatti flicked a Hunter Freeman cross into the path of the onrushing Szetela, who placed the ball in the back of the net.

That would end up being the game's lone goal, giving the Cosmos a 1-0 home victory and further securing their position on top of the NASL Spring Season Standings. The media voted Szetela as Emirates Cosmos Man of the Match.

Members of the media will cast their votes to determine the Emirates Cosmos Man of the Match at every Cosmos home game. At each home match, the winner will receive an Emirates Airbus A380 model airplane with an engraved plaque recognizing the player’s achievement.

The Emirates Cosmos Man of the Match award will culminate in a season-ending Emirates Cosmos Player of the Year award. The recipient of the Emirates Cosmos Player of the Year award will receive two round trip tickets on Emirates from New York (JFK) to Dubai (DXB) to celebrate a triumphant season.
