New York Cosmos B traveled upstate to Dietz Stadium in Kingston, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon, earning a 4-2 win against the recently formed Kingston Stockade Football Club. The defending National Premier League Soccer (NPSL) champions posted their second straight victory and remain in first place of the Northeast Atlantic Conference.

Ivan Berterame and Franklin Castellanos both had early opportunities for Cosmos B in the opening quarter of an hour. The breakthrough came in the 25th minute as Berterame slipped an inch-perfect ball past the defense and Matias Ruiz placed it into the corner of the net one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The visitors doubled their advantage 13 minutes later when Castellanos whipped in a free kick from 35 yards out and Alejandro Mitrano headed home from six yards out. Jesus Alvarez received a yellow card in the 40th minute for a hard sliding tackle near midfield.

The second half kicked off with an early flurry of goals. Kingston Stockade’s top goal scorer, Michael Creswick, cut the lead in half when he found the back of the net in the 50th minute on a well-worked counter attack. However, a positive response from Cosmos B saw a cross from Mitrano turned in by Matias Ruiz for his second goal of the match just three minutes later, restoring the two-goal lead. Michael Creswick grabbed his sixth goal of the season just seconds later in the 54th minute with a tap-in finish, bringing Kingston Stockade within one goal yet again.

As the game began to settle down, Cosmos B Head Coach Fernando Barboto brought on Shaun Russell for Ruiz in the 63rd minute. An outside of the foot cross by Berterame found Alvarez, but goalkeeper Stephen Skonieczny made a fine save to keep Kingston Stockade in the match.

Barboto made two more subs: Julian Stahler for Mitrano in the 74th minute and Per Eik Forgaard replacing Jesus Alvarez in the 82nd minute. A perfectly timed volley from the substitute Forgaard—off a cross from Castellanos in the 89th minute—secured the 4-2 victory for New York Cosmos B.

Ruiz and Castellanos both put in man of the match performances, as Ruiz scored twice while Castellanos created many chances and provided three assists.

Cosmos B will host their next match on the campus of CW Post in Brookville, N.Y. against the second-place Rhode Island Reds on Saturday, June 25 at 5 p.m. ET.
