June 22, 2016 | Listen

This week on #IntotheCosmos, our hosts Ej Garr and Frank Dell'Apa bring you all the news and info you need to know about the New York Cosmos, as the team arrives to the Round of 16 in the U.S. Open Cup for the second consecutive season.

After advancing past NYCFC again on June 15, the Cosmos will be playing host to the New England Revolution of MLS at Belson Stadium on the grounds of St. John's University at 7:30 p.m. ET on June 29.

The Cosmos open the Fall portion of the campaign on July 2, as they host Ottawa at Shuart Stadium.

The guys welcome Cosmos captain Carlos Mendes to the show for the first time this year, as his experience against the Revs in his seven-year career with the Red Bulls provides a bit of insight to what we can expect in the Open Cup. He also discusses the state of the club, what the fans support means to him and how being a dad is getting better by the day!

In this episode, New York Cosmos Assistant Coach Alecko Eskandarian takes us through an amazing career journey, from his early days as the biggest talent in New Jersey through the ups and downs of his professional career, from how he was selected by D.C. United as the No. 1 ranked player in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft to winning the MLS Cup and being called up for the U.S. National Team, to his very unfortunate and early retirement due to multiple concussions.

We also discuss his coaching career ambitions, the importance of his Armenian background, the influence of his father, Andranik Eskandarian, a legendary player having played in the World Cup for Iran, and next to legends Carlos Alberto, Beckenbauer, and Pelé in the NY Cosmos, and the innate hunger and determination that drives him every day. Furthermore, Alecko shares a few memorable anecdotes, one including an ice cream loving Hristo Stoichkov. And much more.
