Lucky Mkosana made his mark with the New York Cosmos in 2015 by showcasing his stamina, running after every ball sent into the box and scoring several match-winning goals past the 80th minute. But up until Saturday night, the Zimbabwean forward hadn't tallied a goal in 2016.

That changed against Ottawa Fury FC in the Cosmos' NASL Fall Season opener. This time Mkosana made waves early in the match, bravely challenging for a ball and winning a penalty in the third minute after a collision with Fury goalkeeper Romuald Peiser. Adam Moffat would step to the spot and convert.

A minute into first-half stoppage time, Mkosana struck for his first goal of the year, a mid-air kick at the edge of the six-yard box after center back David Ochieng placed a ball over the top of the Ottawa defense.

At full time the media voted Mkosana Emirates Cosmos Man of the Match for the first time this year.

Members of the media will cast their votes to determine the Emirates Cosmos Man of the Match at every Cosmos home game. At each home match, the winner will receive an Emirates Airbus A380 model airplane with an engraved plaque recognizing the player’s achievement.

The Emirates Cosmos Man of the Match award will culminate in a season-ending Emirates Cosmos Player of the Year award. The recipient of the Emirates Cosmos Player of the Year award will receive two round trip tickets on Emirates from New York (JFK) to Dubai (DXB) to celebrate a triumphant season.
