THE STAKES

It will be an early clash between the two teams at the top of the NASL Fall Season Standings on Wednesday night. The New York Cosmos return to Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium after a thrilling 3-2 win in Florida against Miami FC this past Saturday. Tony Meola’s Armada FC will make their second trip to New York this year, following a 2-1 home victory over expansion side Puerto Rico FC.

There is potential for a stellar matchup between Lucky Mkosana and Tyler Ruthven. The Cosmos striker has found a hot foot, scoring three times in his last two starts, including a late game-winner against Miami FC. His possible counterpart for this match is Armada FC defender Tyler Ruthven, who has played every minute in the 12 matches of this 2016 NASL Season while compiling 63 clearances and 29 interceptions.

After a trying spring campaign, Jacksonville announced the signings of Alexander Andersson and Nicklas Maripuu, who both joined from second division Swedish clubs in June. Jacksonville has kicked off its Fall Season positively with a win and a draw, while the Cosmos have earned six points in their opening two matches. Both sides will look to continue their encouraging form and battle it out to sit on top of the Fall Standings.

The Cosmos will be on a three-match road trip after this one, traveling to face Rayo OKC, the Tampa Bay Rowdies and FC Edmonton. They’ll return to Shuart Stadium on Saturday, July 30 to host Puerto Rico FC.

MATCHUP HISTORY

New York prevailed in the Spring Season matchup between these two clubs at Shuart Stadium on April 10. Jairo Arrieta and Adam Moffat found the back of the net to help propel the Cosmos to a 2-0 victory.

The Cosmos lead the all-time series against the Jacksonville Armada with a record of 2-1-1 (W-D-L).

NOTES

Hot start: The Cosmos have won their first two NASL Fall Season fixtures, defeating Ottawa and Miami to ascend to the top of the league standings. Giovanni Savarese’s squad has scored five goals while conceding three, earning a +2 goal differential.

Nothing lucky about it: Lucky Mkosana has struck for consecutive match-winning goals to open the Cosmos’ fall campaign. The Zimbabwean forward scored once against Fury FC on July 2 and twice in Miami this past Saturday, making waves in his first two starts of the NASL Season.

Perfect at home: The Cosmos have posted a pristine record at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium this year. Six matches have resulted in six wins, with 11 goals scored and only two conceded. New York defeated Jacksonville 2-0 on Long Island back in April.

Get in front: Unsurprisingly, the Cosmos do well when scoring the first goal. They’ve won seven of eight league games in 2016 when netting the opening tally.
