NEW YORK (July 22, 2016) – The New York Cosmos announced today that defender Jimmy Mulligan has rejoined the club after spending the beginning of the 2016 season on loan to Swope Park Rangers.

“Having Jimmy back with the team gives us more flexibility,” said Cosmos Head Coach Giovanni Savarese. “The length of the Fall Season will test our depth. Jimmy can contribute a great deal to this team going forward.”

Mulligan, 24, made 17 appearances and 16 starts for the Rangers during their inaugural United Soccer League (USL) season, logging 1,432 minutes on the pitch. He started in the club’s debut match, a 2-1 win against Portland Timbers 2 on March 26. Mulligan’s last appearance came in a 2-0 loss to OKC Energy FC on July 12.

“Playing in Kansas City helped me further develop my game, and I'd like to thank the coaches and players for that,” Mulligan said. “I'm happy to be back with my team and I'm ready to contribute.”

A Long Island native, Mulligan served as captain in his senior season at St. John’s University, leading the Red Storm to the Second Round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. He signed with the Cosmos on April 11, 2014 and made his professional debut on October 25 that same year, going the full 90 minutes at right back in a 2-2 home draw against the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

In two seasons Mulligan has made six appearances and five starts for New York. The team next travels to Florida for a matchup with the Tampa Bay Rowdies this Saturday night, July 23. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla.
