BAYAMÓN, PUERTO RICO (August 20, 2016) – The New York Cosmos rallied from a first-half deficit to defeat Puerto Rico FC 2-1 at Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium Saturday night, with midfielder Andrés Flores scoring the deciding goal one minute into second half stoppage time.

Enjoying 62 percent of possession overall, the Cosmos began the match dictating the tempo. But Puerto Rico would open the scoring against the run of play in the 28^th minute. Héctor “Pito” Ramos earned a 1-on-1 opportunity with Jimmy Maurer and made no mistake with his finish, firing under the sprawling Cosmos goalkeeper to put the hosts ahead.

Cosmos forward Jairo Arrieta’s high work rate paid dividends in the 62^nd minute, as the Costa Rican international equalized from close range. Ramon Del Campo’s attempted clearance of Ayoze’s probing ball into the box landed between Arrieta and Puerto Rico FC goalkeeper David Meves, who punched the ball high into the air. Arrieta exhibited persistence and concentration to stay with the play, flicking a shot into the unmanned net when the ball fell at his feet.

Head Coach Giovanni Savarese opted for a flurry of subs beginning in the 76^th minute, bringing on center back Rovérsio and attackers David Diosa and Yasmani Duk. The Cosmos then mounted pressure on Puerto Rico’s back line, culminating with Flores’ go-ahead goal in the 91^st minute. Receiving a Sebastián Guenzatti pass, the 25-year-old midfielder took aim from 28 yards and powered his shot past a diving Meves to give the visitors a 2-1 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

With the win New York (6-2-2 Fall, 12-2-6 Overall) moves into second place in both the NASL Fall Season and Combined Season Standings.
