Road to The Championship: Postseason Scenarios

The Cosmos can lock up home field advantage in November with a strong run of form in their final three regular season matches.

Just three weekend fixtures separate the New York Cosmos from The Championship, the NASL’s four-team postseason tournament.

The Cosmos’ postseason ticket is punched, as are those of FC Edmonton and Spring Season Champion Indy Eleven. But there’s still plenty of jostling that can happen in the standings to determine who seizes the final spot and who earns home field advantage.

Four teams still have a shot at winning the Fall Season title and the guarantee of a home postseason match that comes with it: the Cosmos, Eddies, Indy and Miami FC. As it stands, New York holds a five-point advantage over Edmonton in the Fall Season Standings, though the Canadian side has a game in hand. Indy and Miami lag nine points and 11 points behind the Cosmos, respectively. Like the Eddies, both have more matches left to play than New York.

Miami, the only team of the four that hasn’t locked down a postseason position, has the best opportunity to make up ground in the title race. Alessandro Nesta’s side comes to New York on Oct. 22 and finishes its regular season at home against Edmonton on Oct. 29. In addition to hosting Miami, the Cosmos have two road matches remaining on the schedule. They’ll face last-place Jacksonville on Oct. 15 and close out their regular season against postseason hopefuls Minnesota United on Oct. 29.

The battle for the final spot in The Championship is as intense as ever. Five teams are in the thick of it, separated by only three points in the Combined Season Standings. Minnesota is in the driver’s seat for now, barely holding off Miami, the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Carolina RailHawks and Rayo OKC. If Miami does become the Fall Season Champion, they’ll automatically squeeze out the other contenders and slot into the No. 2 seed, playing at Ocean Bank Field in The Championship Semifinals.

Meanwhile, at the top of the table, the Cosmos hold a six-point edge over Edmonton. They’re aiming to finish first in the Combined Standings for the second year in a row, and doing so would virtually lock up home field advantage throughout the postseason. Juan Arango and the boys in green and white have lost only once in their last 13 games, but playing their final fixtures against two of the top four in the Fall Standings will prove challenging.

There’s plenty of NASL action on tap this week, including four weekday games. Indy and Edmonton each play twice – once on Wednesday and again on Saturday – while the Cosmos will be at Community First Park taking on the Armada FC Saturday night. Expect The Championship picture to come into greater focus by Sunday night, after Rayo welcomes Ottawa Fury FC to Oklahoma in the final match of the weekend.

In 2015, the Cosmos were able to clinch home field throughout the postseason on the final weekend of the regular season, squeaking by Ottawa on goal differential. That proved crucial. Riding what is statistically the best home field advantage in the NASL, they defeated the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and Fury FC in The Championship by a goal each to claim their second championship in three seasons.

The Cosmos have lost only once in their last 39 NASL home matches. If they can guarantee every postseason match they play is in New York, it would provide a massive leg up in their quest to win back-to-back league titles for the first time in the Modern Era.
