Cosmos to make first trip to Kezar Stadium

Reigning champion battle newest NASL expansion team
Published Apr 29, 2017

The New York Cosmos return to action tonight, this time on the West Coast, where they will face the San Francisco Deltas. This will be the first ever meeting between the two teams, as the newest member to the NASL face the reigning league Champion.

The Cosmos head into the match in fifth place, with a record of (1-2-1) while sitting only one point behind the Deltas (1-3-0). A win for New York could put them above San Francisco, as the two are amongst five teams within three points at the top of the overall standings.

New York has won more matches than any other NASL team on the road since the start of the 2016 Season, earning seven victories in the last 18 Regular-Season away contests. The Deltas are hosting their third match of the season, after drawing their home opener against Indy Eleven and winning their first ever game against North Carolina FC.

Danny Szetela, Ayoze, and Javi Márquez each scored once for the Cosmos this season, as the team continues to improve in the final third of the pitch. Márquez was named on Wednesday to the NASL Team of the Week, as well as Deltas defender Nana Attakora.

New York has hit the back of the net three times in the past two matches, while San Francisco has scored just once more this season. Deltas’ striker, Tommy Heinemann, has netted two goals for San Francisco, and is among the league leaders tied for most goals thus far. The Cosmos defense will have to keep a close eye on the St. Louis native, who has scored five times against New York in his NASL career, but captured only one victory over the Cosmos.

San Francisco have a lot of speed and play counter-attacking soccer with wingers, Pablo Dyego, on the left side and Jackson on the right. However, the Deltas will be missing Jackson who is serving out his two game suspension for violent conduct after the Jacksonville Armada draw.

The Cosmos will also have to watch Canadian International and former MLS midfielder, Kyle Bekker, who has played every game this season and scored one goal for his club.

Cosmos goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer will look to add to his sixteen total saves as he’s tied with Brian Sylvestre of North Carolina FC. Maurer has been a key player for New York with two clean sheets and named twice this season in the NASL Team of the Week.

On the other side of the pitch is goalkeeper is Romuald Peiser, who will strive to improve on his previous record against New York. Peiser has conceded 11 goals and has only one win in eight games against the Cosmos.

A big matchup is expected amongst the two teams. For all the action tune in to MSG Plus or San Francisco’s Live Twitter Feed (@sfdeltas) for full game coverage.
