DANNY SZETELA TALKS ARMADA MATCHUP

The veteran midfielder felt honored to wear the Cosmos Captain's Armband against San Francisco

Midfielder, Danny Szetela, is one of three New York Cosmos players to have played every minute so far this season. “It feels good, he said. “Whenever I'm in a game and I step on the field in the Cosmos jersey, I feel good.” Goalkeeper, Jimmy Maurer, and midfielder, Juan Guerra, have also logged 90 minutes in each of New York's five games.

The Cosmos' 1-0 win over the undefeated San Francisco Deltas couldn't have come without a combination of teamwork and leadership. Wearing the captain's armband for the first time with the club, Szetela won two tackles and five duels, and made two clearances, to deny the opposition. “It was great,” said Szetela on captaining the team. “Obviously, putting on the jersey with the Cosmos crest is an honor.” Leading the team out onto the field as the captain made the experience even more special.

Szetela made some noise last year when he scored the late game-winner against NYCFC in the US Open Cup. Should the teams meet again in this year's tournament, repeating that success will be no easy task. “NYCFC is a lot better this year,” said Szetela. “But I think we're a better team than last year also, so it would be exciting,” he added.

The midfielder netted in his first goal of the 2017 NASL Spring Season in a 2-0 win on the road against Miami FC. He doesn't expect Saturday's game against league leaders, Jacksonville Armada, to be easy. “It's going to be a tough game. Jacksonville is a good team, they're very organized. We're going to have to make sure we prepare and be organized in the sense that we finish opportunities.” The Armada remain unbeaten in five games, so making use of chances will be vital for New York to win.

Szetela and the rest of the team continue to train for their upcoming game against Jacksonville Armada FC, on May 6, at 7:00 pm.
