Published May 13, 2017

The New York Cosmos B hosted their first match of the season against Elm City Express at Rocco B. Commisso Stadium. It was a rainy Saturday for soccer, with weather conditions challenging for both teams.

The Cosmos B provided the opening goal as Dave Nigro set up a perfect pass to Fernando Cortez, who hit a wonderful shot from outside the box to beat goalkeeper, Matthew Jones. The home team led 1-0 at halftime, despite Elm City’s best opportunity coming in the 35’ as the shot bounced off the crossbar.

Elm City leveled the match in the 68’ with a low-driven shot by Shaquille Saunchez to beat the Cosmos goalkeeper. Minutes later, Joe Baccielo hit a shot from outside the box which dipped under the crossbar to give his side the lead.

Despite the Cosmos late efforts and an opportunity by substitute Sebastian Capozucchi, Elm City took three points on the road with a 2-1 victory.

Cosmos B return to action on Sunday, May 21 at 4:00 PM at Rocco B. Commisso Stadium at Columbia University.
