New York extends unbeaten run to six games

The New York Cosmos drew 0-0 with the San Francisco Deltas on Military Appreciation Night at MCU Park.

“We are very pleased with tonight’s performance,” said Head Coach and Sporting Director, Giovanni Savarese. “We always want to get three points, but more important than that is the fact that we are getting closer to our true identity. That gives us a good feeling about the future.”

An even start to the first half saw few chances from both teams. The Cosmos had the first say, sending a shot just wide of the far post in the 22nd minute. The Deltas neared the net in the 25th minute when a Greg Jordan through-ball found forward, Thomas Heinemann, who tested Cosmos goalkeeper, Brian Holt, from close range. As the break drew near, San Francisco found the net through Reiner, but the defender was caught offside. New York dominated possession, making use of their home field advantage. Neither team could find the rhythm, however, producing a goalless first 45.

The Cosmos were eager to open the scoring in Brooklyn, kicking off the second half in style. A cross from midfielder, Emmanuel Ledesma, found midfielder, Javi Márquez, whose header bounced off the crossbar. Soon after, a ball from Ledesma hit the side netting. A free kick in the 56th minute saw another chance from Márquez, but his shot went off target.

New York continued to control the run of play, creating chance after chance from set pieces. Defender, Jimmy Mulligan, had a chance to capitalize on the rebound after a corner. Midfielder, Andrés Flores, weaved in and out of San Francisco's back line. Continued success in the midfield from Ledesma earned him Emirates Man of the Match honors.

A great turnout by Cosmos fans helped the team earn a point, extending its unbeaten run to six games.

The night's festivities could not be complete without the celebration of two Cosmos players' contributions to the club. Midfielder, Danny Szetela, and goalkeeper, Jimmy Maurer, were honored for reaching 100 club appearances for the Cosmos this season. Szetela and Maurer became the third and fourth players with 100 games for the club in the Modern Era, joining teammates, Ayoze and Carlos Mendes, who reached the milestone last season.

The Cosmos will be on the road to play North Carolina FC on Sunday, June 4th at 4:00 pm.

The team will return to MCU Park on Wednesday, June 7 at 7:30 pm, as they host FC Edmonton. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, Click Here.
