Cosmos B Fall 1-0 to Brooklyn Italians

Published Jul 8, 2017

Coming off of a 0-0 tie last week against Elm City Express, the Cosmos B looked to bounce back and outplay their opponents, as they took on the Brooklyn Italians at LIU Brooklyn.

The game's pace was at a standstill from the very beginning. Not many chances were created by either team. The first chance for the Cosmos B came in the 7th minute when Jesús Alvarez crossed a great ball to Lucas Mendes, who looked for Mohammed Rashid, but missed wide. The first half continued to be fairly quiet. Cosmos B goalkeeper, Héctor Guerrero, kept it that way with a great defensive save in the 17th minute. The scoreboard read 0-0 as the teams headed into the locker rooms, knowing they missed some opportunities.

The Cosmos B came out for the second half stronger then before, looking motivated and inspired. The team cut straight to the action, as Harri Hawkins sent a curling header in the 48th minute just wide of the crossbar. The Cosmos B looked stronger than their opponents and created many more chances, but didn't capitalize.

A turn of momentum occurred as the Cosmos B defense allowed the Brooklyn Italians to take a 1-0 lead towards the end of the game. The 73rd minute gave the Cosmos B another chance, as Lucas Coutinho passed a ball to Fernando Cortez, who ripped a shot right to the fingertips of the keeper. Matías Ruiz had a pair of chances in the final five minutes of play, including a rocket that was blocked by a defender. Ruiz ripped another one in, but it flew over the crossbar.

The Cosmos B turned up the pace and looked to gain possession as they sought a late equalizer, but were down 1-0 at the final whistle.

The New York Cosmos B look to finish the season strong, as they take on New York Athletic Club tomorrow at 8:00 pm at Rocco B. Commisso Stadium.
