Last Minute Goals

Cavillo scores crucial goal for Cosmos again
Published Jul 18, 2017
Most soccer players dream of scoring a game-winning goal. Hearing the roar of the crowd as you celebrate with your teammates or silencing an opposing crowd is something any player would love. For Eric Cavillo, that dream has become a reality, twice!

Cavillo scored a crucial late goal against FC Edmonton last Saturday. With the game winding down, Cavillo pounced on a loose ball inside the box, and after the referee decided that the goal was allowed to stand, the Cosmos were euphoric. Due to Cavillo’s quick feet, the Cosmos ended the Spring Season with three crucial points.

This was not the first time Cavillo has scored a game winning goal. While the goal was not scored in the dying embers of the game, he scored last year in a crucial match as the Fall Season wound down. The California native scored a bullet header along the way to an important Cosmos win, scoring the only goal against Minnesota FC.

“It feels great to score those winning goals. It’s amazing to me that I can score my first and second professional goals, and that they can both be game winners,” said Cavillo. “I just see the ball and react. While it is nice to imagine dribbling down the wing, beating their entire team and scoring, it doesn’t compare to the actual feeling of scoring a game-winning goal.”

Calvillo has made multiple first team appearances recently. He started the last two games, and chipped in with one goal and one assist in those two games.

“I’m relishing the chance to be part of the first team set up. I worked really hard over the course of the season, and I really appreciate Gio [Savarese] recognizing that work and putting me into important games.” Cavillo stated.

It is clear that he is enjoying his new role, and after multiple strong performances from the bench, Cavillo has shown that he can be an important player to the Cosmos moving forward. Having moved into the starting lineup for the past two games, Cavillo has responded with improved performances.

With the Spring Season winding to a close, the Cosmos were in contention for 3rd place and with their win over Edmonton, New York finished the season strong. When the chips were down, Cavillo delivered and gave the Cosmos exactly what they needed to end the Spring Season on a great note.

The Cosmos return home to face Miami FC for the start of the Fall Season. The action kicks off on Saturday, July 29 at 7:00 pm, EST. Watch on MSG Networks, or come out to MCU Park to see New York’s most decorated soccer team in person.
