Head to Head: Cosmos' Record Against Spanish Clubs

How New York stack up against Spanish opposition in the Modern Era
Published Jul 21, 2017

The New York Cosmos will travel to Regina, Saskatchewan to face La Liga's Valencia CF on Saturday, July 22, in their third-ever match against a Spanish side in the Modern Era.

The Cosmos have previously faced Villarreal CF and SD Eibar in 2013 and 2016, respectively.

The match against Villarreal in November 2013 was particularly special for the Cosmos, as it honored legend, Marcos Senna, who spent 11 seasons with the club prior to joining New York.

The Spanish international wore Villarreal's shirt for the first half before making the symbolic switch to play for the Cosmos in the second half. He would eventually tally 12 goals and three assists for the Cosmos in the 2013, 2014, and 2015 NASL Regular Seasons.

Senna will be back in New York for the August 19 match against Indy Eleven.

New York then took on SD Eibar in a May 2016 exhibition match. The Cosmos would prevail, topping the Spanish club 7-6 in a dramatic penalty shootout. With the teams tied 2-2 at the end of regulation time, the game went straight to penalties to determine the winner. Andrés Flores, Lucky Mkosana, and David Diosa, among others, converted their spot kicks for New York.

The Cosmos will play Valencia CF on Saturday, July 22, before returning to MCU Park to kick off the 2017 NASL Fall Season against Miami FC on Saturday, July 29 at 7:00 pm. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, click here.
