David Diosa: On the Road to Recovery

The gifted Colombian defender has been facing a knee injury for several months, and has just begun to practice along his teammates, hoping to be able to play in a full 90-minute match very soon.

Diosa obtained a knee injury, more specifically a partial rupture of the ligaments, during the preseason prior to the 2017 NASL Spring Season. It was during the Cosmos' first preseason match in the Dominican Republic against Atlántico FC.

“I started to feel a pain in my knee during that first game in the Dominican Republic,” recalls Diosa. “I was out for a couple of weeks after that and then when I came back I still felt some pain in that same area. I was given a PRP injection in the knee since it turned out to be pretty serious, and because of this I was out for the entire Spring Season. I was devastated.”

Diosa’s journey to the Cosmos first team was an impressive one. The 24-year-old was a part of their U-18 and U-23 squad, and signed his first contract with the first team back in 2013. In 2016, he was a key player in Cosmos Head Coach and Sporting Director, Giovanni Savarese’s lineup. Appearing in 23 games and starting for 11 of them in the NASL 2016 Regular Season, Diosa’s presence was felt both on and off the field, as he was a vital member of that Championship-winning team.

“It was a great year, both individually and on the team level,” admits Diosa. “We were a very organized and intelligent team, especially in the Fall Season. We had quality players and thanks to our hard work, we won the league and it was incredible.”

The 2016 NASL Goal of the Year nominee has returned to training as of last week and hopes to be back on the field, competing alongside his teammates, as soon as possible.

“I’m working very hard. I just have to take it one day at a time and hope that my knee gets back to how it was during the 2016 season,” says the Medellín native. “I just want to be on the field again to compete for 90 minutes and to be an important part of this team again. I hope to be back on the field in about 2-4 weeks, that’s my objective.”

With a positive start to the Fall Season, with the hopeful return of Diosa, and the return of Juan Arango (very fundamental to this 2016 NASL Championship-winning squad), there is much to look forward to in the upcoming games that the NY Cosmos have yet to play.

“Juan is a great player,” mentions Diosa. “He was huge for us in 2016, and I know he’ll be extremely helpful for us this season. He’s not only a great player, but he’s a great guy and motivator off the field. That will do wonders for us this Fall Season. Besides returning to league play, my goal is to lift that trophy once again. This team, this organization, deserves it.”
