Scouting the Opponent: Miami FC

The Spring Season Champions are on a five-game winning streak
Published Sep 6, 2017

The New York Cosmos travel south to take on Miami FC on Wednesday, September 6 at 8:00 pm. With a squad that includes former Cosmos defenders, Gabriel Farfán and Hunter Freeman, as well as midfielder, Michael Lahoud, Miami have an added edge against New York.

Here are some of the Spring Season Champions' winning ingredients:

Goalkeeper: Daniel Vega

Miami's main shot-stopper, Daniel Vega, is one of the keys to the team's consistent success. Vega leads the NASL in clean sheets, with 11. He has also conceded the fourth-least goals (18) in the Regular Season and is fourth in saves (59), behind Cosmos keeper, Jimmy Maurer (63).

Vega may have allowed three goals in the Cosmos' Fall Season opener in Brooklyn (W 3-1), but he also made three saves to deny New York. He saved four of five shots in Miami's 2-1 win in the teams' last meeting at Riccardo Silva Stadium on June 24. Vega also prevented two of four shots from finding the target on April 8, as the Cosmos recorded a 2-0 shutout on the road. New York will aim to finish their chances to get past Vega in Wednesday's game.

Defender: Hunter Freeman

A familiar face to Cosmos fans, Freeman has been one of the pillars of Miami's defense. The former Cosmos right back tallies the second-most minutes of any outfield player for Miami (1,841) and is the team leader in total passes (1,258), good for third in the NASL. He has also made his presence known in the attack, and is tied for third-most chances for Miami, with 23.

Freeman was sent off in the teams' last meeting, exiting the pitch in the 25th minute following a reckless challenge. Last time at Riccardo Silva Stadium, the six-foot defender won three of four duels, taking 56 touches on the ball in 90 minutes that ended in a 2-1 win for Miami.

The Cosmos will look to prevent Freeman from making passes that can lead to goal-scoring opportunities.

Midfielder: Richie Ryan

With the fourth-most passes in the NASL (1,256) and a passing accuracy of 90.9%, Richie Ryan is one of Miami's go-to distributors. Ryan got two assists against the Cosmos when the teams last met at Riccardo Silva Stadium, leading Miami to a 2-1 triumph. Playing the full 90 minutes, the Ireland native helped a 10-man Miami ward off the Cosmos attack by winning six of eight duels and two of his three tackles.

Ryan is no stranger to matchups against the Cosmos, having captained the Ottawa Fury against New York in the 2015 NASL Soccer Bowl. There's no doubt he'll look to set up opportunities for his team in Wednesday's game, so the Cosmos better keep a lookout.

Forward: Jaime Chávez

Stéfano Pinho may be Miami's top scorer, but Jaime Chávez has been on a roll as of late, scoring in a fourth consecutive game to catapult Miami to their fifth straight victory. Miami won three of their last four games with 1-0 scorelines, and Chávez had the game-winner on each occasion. He totals five goals and four assists for his team, netting in each from inside the box.

Chávez is among Miami's best distributors, completing 82% of his passes as well as 60% of his long passes. Adept at scoring with both of his feet as well as heading the ball, the six-foot one-inch forward will be a tough opponent.

The Cosmos aim to be tougher when they face Miami on Wednesday, September 6 at 8:00 pm. Watch the game live on MSG Networks, BeIN Sports and BeIN Sports En Español.
