Scouting the Opponent: Jacksonville Armada FC

Good defending a key strength for the Armada
Published Sep 16, 2017

The New York Cosmos will face Jacksonville Armada FC in the first of three back-to-back home games at MCU Park on Sunday, September 17 at 5:00 pm. The Cosmos are looking forward to the rematch after losing 2-0 to the Armada on September 3. There will be no shortage of emotions as both teams make the final push for the NASL playoffs.

Here are the main players behind Jacksonville's previous success against the Cosmos:

Goalkeeper: Caleb Patterson-Sewell

Patterson-Sewell was instrumental to the Armada's 2-0 win over the Cosmos in the teams' last meeting, guiding his team to their first shutout against New York since July 2015. The keeper saved all five shots that he faced in that game, adding a seventh clean sheet to his record, good for third in the league. He had little work to do in the first half, making all of his saves after the hour mark. The Cosmos tested the keeper primarily from inside the box, and Paterson-Sewell came through for the opposition on each occasion, parrying headers from Eugene Starikov in the 68th minute and Pablo Vranjicán in the 77th. He also kept the Cosmos from capitalizing on a 90th minute set piece, knocking away Arango's free kick delivery.

Defender: Kalen Ryden

A key distributor for Jacksonville, Ryden is great at getting the ball to his teammates, completing 79.9% of his passes so far this year. He is third in his team in total clearances (69) and fourth in total passes (1,107).

Ryden was the most active defender for the Armada when they last played the Cosmos, doing well to close down the box as well as the left flank. He totaled seven clearances, making two interceptions and winning all three of his tackles, as well as seven of 13 duels.

Nearly half of the Cosmos' corner kicks on September 3 resulted from Ryden's work. The Cosmos can continue to challenge the left-back in Sunday's game.

Midfielder: J.C. Banks

Effective in both the attack and defense, Banks' consistency makes him one of the Armada's regular starters. He is second in his team in shots (26) and total crosses (50), as well as third in chances created (17).

Last time at MCU Park, Banks combined well with Armada forward, Ciarán Kilduff, creating three dangerous chances for the visitors. Banks also kept the Cosmos from advancing in the midfield, winning six of his seven tackles and eight of his 13 duels.

Forward: Ciarán Kilduff

Kilduff has impressed in his first three appearances so far for Jacksonville, scoring a goal and completing 80% of his long passes since joining the Armada in late July.

The Irish forward netted his first NASL goal in the September 3 matchup against the Cosmos. Kilduff tapped the ball in from close range following a corner in the 33rd minute to double the Armada's lead. Throughout the game, he won five fouls, as well as 15 of his 28 duels.

The Cosmos will look to keep Kilduff from adding to his tally on Sunday, September 17 at 5:00 pm. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, click here.
