The New York Cosmos announced today the signing of defender Pedro Galvão.

“It’s an honor to represent the New York Cosmos, and I’m very excited for the season, “Galvão said. “Attitude and enthusiasm play a big part in my life, and I can’t express how excited I am to join the team.

“The mentality of the New York Cosmos is about winning and so is mine. I’m here to help and hopefully we can achieve our goals.”

The 29-year old defender is a native of Waterbury, Conn., but spent the bulk of his career playing in Portugal. He spent time in the youth system of first-division Portuguese clubs Benfica and Acadêmica. He also played for Gil Vicente and Sertanense among several other clubs.

Galvão, who primarily operates as a left back but can operate in midfield, returned to North America to play professionally in 2016 when he joined FC Edmonton of the North American Soccer League (NASL). He spent two seasons with the Canadian club, making 34 league appearances. Galvão most recently played for Penn FC in the United Soccer League (USL), where he played in 17 league games. Galvão is the second player from Penn FC to join the Cosmos in recent weeks, following Aaron Dennis, who signed earlier this month.

“Pedro fits the mold of what we’re looking for in our defenders,” Senior Vice President Joe Barone said. “He’s strong defensively, but is comfortable on the ball and joining in on the attack. We’re pleased he’s joined us for the 2019 season.”

“He’s a very good player and he brings a lot of quality,” Cosmos head coach Carlos Mendes said. “He’s played overseas so he has a lot of experience and I think he is a huge addition to the club and the team.”

More info on the team and 2019 NPSL Founders Cup will be announced at a later date.
