During his time with the club, VFL Osnabrück competed in the second and third divisions of German soccer: 2. Bundesliga and 3. Liga. Prior to joining the Cosmos, Murphy also played regularly for the New York Athletic Club, which fields teams in the National Premier Soccer League and Cosmopolitan Soccer League.
