When the Cosmos moved to Giants Stadium for Pelé’s final season in 1977, crowds finally caught the soccer buzz and northern New Jersey became known as “Cosmos Country,” regularly drawing more than 70,000 fans to the Meadowlands, where the 2026 FIFA World Cup Finals championship match will be played.
