Unites the World
FIFA (the world-governing body for soccer) holds the World Cup in a different country or countries every four years. The first was held in 1930, won by host nation Uruguay (the USA finished 3rd). The 2026 men’s World Cup will be the 23rd tournament. Only Brazil has qualified for each of the 23, winning 5 (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002).
The women’s World Cup is held the year after each men’s World Cup. The first was held in 1991. The US Women’s National Team has won it four times (1991, 1999, 2015, 2019).
