When US Soccer revoked the NASL’s 2nd division sanction in 2017, the league filed an antitrust lawsuit and ceased operations. Cosmos’ owner Rocco Commisso, who had saved the club from oblivion earlier that year, called for reform and funded the lawsuit but the league ceased operations. During the pandemic, after playing NISA “ghost-games” without a crowd in 2020, the club once again went on hiatus at the beginning of 2021.
