New York Cosmos (3-2-0, 11 points) vs. FC Edmonton (1-2-1, 5 points)
Sunday, May 10 at 2 p.m. ET | It's #CosmosMomsDay at Shuart Stadium!
New York Cosmos: Heading into Week 6 the Cosmos continue to build on their best start of the modern era, leading the NASL Spring Season standings with 11 points through five games. A 1-0 win over Ottawa Fury FC in their first ever game at Coney Island’s MCU Park pushed the Cosmos’ record in the state of New York to a perfect 2-0-0 on the year. Lucky Mkosana scored his first goal of the season off a Leo Fernandes assist in the 14th minute to secure the victory.
The Cosmos are currently six points ahead of eighth place Edmonton in the Spring Season standings and can widen the margin come Sunday. Four league fixtures will take place on Saturday, which puts both the Cosmos and Eddies in the unique situation of seeing how the standings shake out before they take the pitch.
FC Edmonton: Don’t let their position in the league standings fool you. The Eddies have not lost since their season opener against Jacksonville Armanda FC back on April 4. Before a 2-2 draw in last Sunday’s contest against Minnesota United, FC Edmonton had won three games in a row, scoring three goals in each of the victories. Two of those games were played in the Amway Canadian Championship against Ottawa Fury FC, and the resulting 6-2 aggregate win has Edmonton set for a matchup with the Vancouver Whitecaps of Major League Soccer.
FC Edmonton is tied for the second-highest goal total in the NASL this season. Tomi Ameobi, Ritchie Jones and Lance Laing lead the club with two goals each. A result on the road in league play would be massive for Edmonton. Even though the team is eighth in the standings, it's just three points out of second place.
These two teams have met a total of five times, resulting in four draws and a Cosmos win that came in the 2014 NASL Spring Season.
Their last game was played at Clark Field on September 28, 2014. Danny Szetela scored a goal in the 51st minute off an assist from Mads Stokkelien, but Tomi Ameobi evened up the match at 1-1 in the 62nd minute. Although FC Edmonton is winless against the Cosmos, New York is looking for its first win against Edmonton in Shuart Stadium.
"Every game is difficult. Now we play Edmonton, a very good team. They have players that can create problems for any team. We are focusing and making sure we have the right mentality."
-Head coach Giovanni Savarese
"We try to come at every team early and get a goal. Run at them and make them tired. We're the New York Cosmos. We have to come out flying and give it to them like that."
-Forward Lucky Mkosana
"It should be a good crowd, full of moms. My mom is coming, so that'll be nice."
-Midfielder Leo Fernandes
