NEW YORK (July 29, 2015) – The New York Cosmos announced today that defender Hunter Freeman has signed a contract extension with the team. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“This is a special club with a unique culture so there was no hesitation on my part in signing a new deal,” Freeman said. “Now that the contract is out of the way, I’m just focused on the fall and helping this team try to win some additional silverware.”

Freeman, 30, has been a regular starter since joining the Cosmos in 2013. The right back has made 41 league appearances for the Cosmos while recording one goal and three assists.

“Hunter has great experience and is an important player for us,” head coach Giovanni Savarese said. “I’m very pleased that he has signed a new deal and committed to the club.”

Freeman joined the Cosmos in February 2013 after playing in more than 120 matches in Major League Soccer with the Colorado Rapids, New York Red Bulls, Toronto FC and Houston Dynamo. Freeman has also spent time as a professional overseas, playing for IK Start of the Norwegian Tippeligaen in 2009 and 2010.

Freeman became the seventh overall pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft after a standout career at the University of Virginia where he started 60 matches in three years and set a new school record for assists in a season (21). He has also made numerous appearances for the U.S. national team at the U-20 and U-23 levels.
