Bolivia has been placed in Group D for the Copa America Centenario along with Argentina, Chile and Panama. With two tournament favorites in Argentina and Chile, it won’t be easy for Bolivia to advance past the Group Stage. Ranked 82nd in the latest FIFA World Rankings, Bolivia advanced from Group A in the 2015 Copa America and was eliminated by Peru in a quarterfinal. La Verde won their sole Copa America title as tournament hosts in 1963, and finished runners-up in 1997.
Forward Yasmani Duk will represent the New York Cosmos at the Copa America Centenario tournament this summer. Duk earned his first cap for the Bolivian national team and scored his first international goal on Nov. 17, 2015 against Paraguay in 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification. Duk scored in his full debut for the Cosmos in a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rowdies on May 22. He also found the net twice in a friendly match against SD Eibar in Las Vegas on May 25.
The 28-year-old wore the captain’s armband in a friendly match with his country against the United States on May 28. Duk provides a strong presence up front. At 5-foot-10, he can hold the ball up well with his back toward goal and also run at the defense. His physicality and relentlessness make him a daunting man to mark for opposing back lines.
Below is a game-by-game look at the Group Stage for Duk and the Bolivians. View the full tournament roster for Bolivia here.
In their most favorable Group Stage match, Bolivia will take on Panama in Central Florida on Monday, June 6. The Panamanians are led by Jaime Penedo in net, Anibal Godoy in midfield as well as both Blas Perez and Gabriel Torres up front. Los Canaleros will try to build off of their third-place finish at last summer’s Gold Cup as they make an inaugural appearance in Copa America. Bolivia will almost certainly need to earn a result in this opening matchup to upset the odds and advance from the group.
Facing off against the 2015 Copa America Champions on Friday, June 10 will be no easy task for Bolivia. Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez, Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal and Barcelona goalkeeper Claudio Bravo are some of Chile’s big names who will look to continue their success from last summer. Duk and the Bolivian forward corps will need to make the most of any chances they can create to keep pace with a dangerous attacking side.
Heavyweights Lionel Messi and Argentina will be the final challenge of the Group Stage for Bolivia on Tuesday, June 14. The Bolivians could make history with a win against the top-ranked national team in the world. These two sides last squared off on March 29 of this year in World Cup qualification. Goals from Messi and Gabriel Mercado had the Argentinians up two scores 30 minutes in, but Bolivia battled to stay within striking distance, eventually falling 2-0 in Córdoba.
