HEMPSTEAD, NY (August 31, 2016) – The New York Cosmos picked up their fourth straight win in decisive fashion Wednesday night, defeating Indy Eleven 3-0 to remain unbeaten at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium in 2016.

“[Indy] have been on a good path, and for us to win at home against them is an important win,” said Cosmos Head Coach Giovanni Savarese. “These are three very important points for us to continue down the path that we have set forth.”

Midfielder Rubén Bover combined with forward Jairo Arrieta to put the home side ahead less than 10 minutes into the game. Arrieta exhibited fine hold-up play, shielding the ball at the top of the 18-yard box with his back to goal while Bover streaked into the area. The Spaniard ran onto Arrieta’s through ball and picked out the bottom right corner of the net, beating Indy Eleven goalkeeper Jon Busch in the eighth minute. It was Bover’s second goal of the NASL Season.

“We've grown in confidence a lot lately,” said Bover. “When we play together like this, it's fantastic. We’re moving the ball well and finding the net.”

In the 17th minute midfielder Danny Szetela earned another scoring opportunity for New York, drawing a foul inside the right edge of the penalty area. Up stepped Venezuelan international Juan Arango, who converted from the spot to give the Cosmos a 2-0 advantage they would take into halftime.

Indy was reduced to 10 men early in the second half. Cory Miller’s bold challenge of Cosmos winger David Diosa in the box warranted a red card, sending Arango to the penalty spot again. This time his attempt missed high, keeping the Cosmos lead at two goals.

But Arango would not be denied his second goal. In the 73rd minute, he positioned himself at the end of Bover’s cross sent in from the left penalty flag and headed home his fourth score in two matches.

The Cosmos (8-2-2 Fall, 14-2-6 Combined) shored up their spot at the top of the league with the win. They are now three points ahead of second-place FC Edmonton in the NASL Fall Season Standings and four points clear of the Eddies in the Combined Season Standings.

“We looked good offensively,” Savarese said. “We can work on a couple of things still, but I was pleased with the performance of the team."

Now unbeaten in 15 consecutive regular season home matches, the Cosmos will have to hit the road for a fixture against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on Saturday, September 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
