MATCH GUIDE: COSMOS AIM TO PROLONG UNBEATEN STREAK AGAINST PUERTO RICO FC

New York to face Puerto Rico for the third time in 2017
Published Jun 14, 2017
The New York Cosmos will host Puerto Rico FC at MCU Park in their third meeting of the 2017 NASL Spring Season. The teams played to a scoreless draw at Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium in the Cosmos' season opener. New York dealt a 4-3 blow to PRFC at MCU Park on May 14. Andrés Flores, Juan Guerra, Ryan Richter, and Walter Restrepo bagged in goals for the Cosmos, with two assists from Emmanuel Ledesma and one from Dejan Jaković.

The Cosmos (4th, 4W-5D-2L) approach the matchup having earned a point in a 2-2 contest against North Carolina FC. An early goal from Irvin Herrera inside the six-yard box kicked things off. New York was down a goal when Kalif Alhassan came off the bench to level the score, curling in a stellar chip from inside the area to open his account for the club.

Puerto Rico FC (7th, 1W-4D-6L) head to Brooklyn following a 1-3 loss at home to the San Francisco Deltas. PRFC is one of two teams that has yet to win on the road, and is tied with Indy Eleven for most goals conceded in the NASL (19). Goalkeeper, Trevor Spangenberg, has conceded 13 goals so far this season, tied with FC Edmonton's Chris Konopka for third-most in the league.

The Cosmos can create danger in the midfield through Andrés Flores, who tallies two goals against Puerto Rico FC. Flores is one of two players to have played every game for New York so far in the 2017 Spring Season. The Salvadoran has been instrumental to the Cosmos' attack, leading the team in chances created (17). Defender, Ryan Richter, has also featured in all 11 games for New York this season, contributing a goal and two assists in that time.

The hosts will need to keep an eye on PRFC's attacking line, including forward, Emery Welshman, who got a goal and an assist against the Cosmos in the teams' previous meeting. Another key figure for Puerto Rico FC is Giuseppe Gentile, who leads the team in shots (21), tallying two goals and as many assists in nine appearances.

The Cosmos are unbeaten against PRFC in all four meetings between the teams, winning three times, drawing once, and outscoring the opposition 9-4.
