Cosmos Midfielder, Javi Marquez, was named Emirates Cosmos Man of the Match after scoring the only goal of the night in a 1-0 win over Puerto Rico FC on Sunday night at MCU Park in Brooklyn.

Marquez’s goal in the 73rd minute proved to be decisive, as his low blast finished pretty passing play off an assist from Andrés Flores.

“Luckily, today I was the one who scored, but it’s definitely a team effort,” Márquez said. “I wouldn’t be able to score without my teammates’ help and I’m very happy for this victory.”

The Spaniard was strong on the ball as he won four fouls for the Cosmos and connected on 28 of his 33 passes in the victory.

The goal was his fifth of the season, which puts him in a three-way tie as the Cosmos’ second leading goal scorer.

The midfielder previously earned the MOTM award on April 22 and September 18, both against Jacksonville Armada FC.

Members of the media cast their votes to determine the Emirates Cosmos Man of the Match at every Cosmos home game.

The Cosmos will travel to Indianapolis over the weekend to battle Indy Eleven in a rematch of last season’s Championship Final. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm. The Cosmos return to MCU Park for their home finale vs. FC Edmonton on Saturday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, click here.
