PATERSON, N.J. – The New York Cosmos today announced the signing of defender Stalyn Acosta, adding another promising young player to the club’s roster entering into the second half of the USL League One season.

Acosta joins the Cosmos after playing with the club’s partner organization, American Soccer Club of New York, and most recently playing professionally with Ponce FC in Puerto Rico. A natural left back who can also play in defensive midfield, the Honduras youth product impressed the Cosmos coaching staff during a recent friendly against ASC New York.

“Stalyn comes from our partner club American Soccer Club of New York. He played well against us in the friendly and he comes highly recommended from the club,” said Giuseppe Rossi, Head of Soccer.

Acosta arrives at an important time for the Cosmos, with starting left back Davey Mason expected to miss the remainder of the season due to injury. The opportunity creates an immediate opening for Acosta to compete for a starting role and strengthen the club’s back line as the playoff race intensifies.

Head Coach Davide Corti said Acosta earned the opportunity with his performance against the Cosmos.

“I was impressed the way he played against us in the friendly match. He showed that he can defend at this level and he has ability going forward too.”

Acosta becomes the latest example of the player development pathway between American Soccer Club of New York and the Cosmos, reinforcing the organizations’ shared commitment to identifying and advancing talented players capable of competing at the professional level.

The Cosmos return to action this week as they continue their push for a postseason berth in USL League One.
