On Sunday, June 28th, the New York Cosmos will play Santos Laguna in an
international friendly at Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, NJ. Players and
representatives from both clubs discussed the match’s significance.
The event represents more than just an exhibition. For the Cosmos, it serves
as another milestone in the club’s return to professional soccer and an
opportunity to showcase the organization’s long-term vision to supporters
throughout the region.
“To have the opportunity to play a club of Santos Laguna’s stature so early in
this process is remarkable for us,” said Erik Stover, Cosmos CEO.
Stover noted that the match aligns with the club’s broader efforts to reconnect
with communities across North Jersey while introducing a new generation of
fans to the club. With one of Mexico’s most recognized clubs coming to
Paterson, the organization views the event as an opportunity to celebrate both
the area’s diversity and its passion for soccer.
“We’re reaching out to the Mexican community specifically, and it’s very much
part of our strategy moving forward,” Stover added.
The significance of the occasion extends to the soccer side of the organization
as well. Club leadership sees the match as an opportunity for players and
coaches to measure themselves against a respected Liga MX opponent while
continuing the team’s development during its inaugural USL League One
campaign.
Giuseppe Rossi, Head of Soccer, emphasized the excitement surrounding the
event.
“It’s an honor to play against a historic team like Santos Laguna,” Rossi said.
“The players are excited, and it’s a great opportunity for the community.”
For Davide Corti, Head Coach, the friendly offers valuable experience during
a break in the league games. The Cosmos will use this match as an
opportunity to continue developing as a team while testing themselves against
top-level opposition.
Corti believes matches like this can accelerate the growth of some young
players by exposing them to different styles of play and a higher level of
competition than they may encounter on a weekly basis.
“We consider this one of the most important games we’re going to have
moving forward,” Corti said.
That excitement is shared throughout the locker room, particularly among
players with personal connections to Mexican soccer. Several Cosmos
players grew up watching Liga MX and recognize the opportunity to compete
against one of the league’s established clubs.
Cosmos players also reflected on the personal significance of facing a club
they grew up watching. Defender Jordan Chavez, whose family is from
Mexico, described the opportunity as a dream come true.
“I’ve grown up watching Liga MX, so being able to step on the field against a
team like Santos Laguna is a dream come true,” Chavez said.
For many players, the match represents a chance to gauge their own
progress while performing in front of family members and supporters who
understand the significance of the occasion.
Goalkeeper Javier Garcia echoed that sentiment, noting that the match is
more than just a regular friendly for them.
“It’s not just a friendly for us, it’s a chance to test ourselves and learn from a
club of that level,” Garcia said.
Santos Laguna arrives in Paterson with similar objectives. While the match
forms part of the club’s preseason preparations, it also provides an
opportunity to engage with supporters in the United States and participate in
an event that highlights the growing connection between Mexican and
American soccer communities.
“We know the Cosmos well. We know the history they have and the
importance the club has in the United States,” said Santosright-back Javier
Abella.
The mutual respect between the two organizations has helped elevate interest
in the match, which is expected to attract supporters from across the New
York metropolitan area. The event will bring together fans of both clubs while
showcasing Paterson and Hinchliffe Stadium on an international stage.
As two historic clubs prepare to meet in Paterson, Sunday’s match promises
to be a celebration of soccer culture, competition, and community, bringing
together supporters from across the region for a unique international
crossover.
Kickoff is set for Sunday at 5:00p.m. EST at Hinchliffe Stadium.

Back in Record Time: Galazzini’s Road From Injury to Game-Winning Goal
By: Sabrina Stott
Just two days after undergoing a foot procedure, New York Cosmos defender Davide Galazzini returned to the field and scored the game-winning goal against Fort Wayne FC on March 28. His rapid recovery was the result of expert medical care, careful rehabilitation, and the resilience of a professional athlete determined to get back on the pitch.
Galazzini sustained a foot contusion while traveling for away matches. As soon as he noticed the injury, he consulted with the team’s athletic trainer and a physical therapist in an effort to address the issue. Despite weeks of treatment, the medical staff was unable to find a solution that fully resolved the injury.
Once he returned from the road, Galazzini was referred to Dr. Wright of Quantum Foot and Ankle Group in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, the official foot and ankle specialist of the New York Cosmos. According to Dr. Wright, “It’d been several weeks, and it just wasn’t getting better.” He explained that injuries like Galazzini’s can be particularly challenging because blood can collect in small compartments within the foot, creating ongoing discomfort and limiting recovery.
When conservative treatment options proved unsuccessful, the focus shifted toward a more definitive solution. After evaluating the injury, Dr. Wright and Galazzini decided to proceed with a minor surgical procedure requiring anesthesia. The procedure addressed the injury while minimizing the risk of additional tissue damage that could have jeopardized Galazzini’s availability for the remainder of the season. As Dr. Wright noted, “The less cutting you do, the less exposure there is for infection.”
Several factors contributed to Galazzini’s rapid return, including Dr. Wright’s surgical approach and the defender’s exceptional physical condition. While the average patient would likely require a longer recovery period, Galazzini’s status as a professional athlete played a significant role in his healing process. Dr. Wright explained, “He is an athlete… they have very high VO2 max, and that does help with healing.”
A key component of the procedure was Dr. Wright’s use of minimally invasive techniques. Using specialized magnifying glasses, he was able to create the smallest incision possible while treating the injury. By limiting the size of the incision, he reduced additional tissue damage and lowered the risk of complications, helping to accelerate the recovery process. As Dr. Wright explained, “You don’t want to invoke any more damage than there already is.”
While Galazzini’s return to the field came remarkably quickly, Dr. Wright emphasized that player safety remained his top priority throughout the process. He only recommends clearance when he is confident an athlete can return without a significant risk of reinjury. Following the procedure, Dr. Wright closely monitored Galazzini’s recovery to ensure he was ready to safely return to competition. According to Dr. Wright, “He said he didn’t have any pain the next day when I checked on him.” That positive response gave the medical team confidence that he was progressing as hoped.
Galazzini’s recovery timeline was far from typical. Dr. Wright noted that “For the normal person who is not a professional, it would be a few days of downtime.” Most patients would require more than two days to recover from a procedure of this nature. His rapid return was the result of several unique factors, including his physical conditioning, access to specialized care, and close medical supervision.
Modern sports medicine continues to demonstrate how collaboration between athletes and medical professionals can produce exceptional outcomes. In Galazzini’s case, that partnership allowed him to recover quickly enough to return to the lineup and make an immediate impact. His game-winning goal against Fort Wayne FC was more than just a decisive moment on the scoreboard—it was the culmination of weeks of perseverance, expert medical treatment, and a recovery process that allowed him to return to the field far sooner than most would have thought possible.

Match Preview: Cosmos Travel to Face Forward Madison
The Cosmos return to USL League One action as they travel to face Forward Madison in the second meeting between the two clubs this season. Their first matchup at Hinchliffe Stadium proved to be an entertaining contest, with the Cosmos battling back to earn a 2-2 draw after overcoming a two-goal deficit.
As the season enters a critical stretch, the Cosmos continue their fight to climb the standings and turn strong performances into valuable points. While results have not always reflected the effort shown on the field, the club remains focused on building momentum and closing the gap on the teams above them.
Forward Madison enters the match in a similar position, fighting to remain in the playoff race. The Wisconsin side has posted two wins and three losses in its last five matches and currently sits just outside the postseason positions. With both clubs looking to gain ground in the standings, the matchup carries added importance for each side.
The Cosmos will look to build on the resilience they showed in the first meeting, where they refused to quit and earned a result in front of the home crowd. That fighting mentality has remained a theme throughout the season and will be needed once again against a Forward Madison team eager to capitalize on its home-field advantage.
For the Cosmos, Saturday’s matchup represents another opportunity to gain momentum, collect valuable points, and continue their climb up the USL League One table. With both teams chasing positioning in a crowded standings race, every point carries added significance as the season approaches its midway point.

Pride Night Press Conference
By: Isabella Ferrou
PATERSON, N.J. — On Saturday, June 6, 2026, the New York Cosmos hosted Pride Night during a Prinx Tires USL Cup match against Hartford Athletic. While the Cosmos did not get the result they wanted, falling 4-1 to the USL Championship side, the evening was about more than the scoreline.
Prior to kickoff, the Cosmos hosted a Pride Night press conference at the museum inside Hinchliffe Stadium, bringing together local LGBTQ+ organizations and City of Paterson officials to discuss inclusion, visibility, and community.
Paterson Mayor André Sayegh opened the event by highlighting Pride Month and the importance of fostering a diverse and welcoming community.
Throughout the press conference, representatives from participating organizations shared what Pride means to them and discussed the role events like Pride Night play in creating more inclusive spaces within sports.
Daniel Hoffman, Vice President of Barnegat Pride, an LGBTQ+ advocacy and support organization based in South Jersey, said Pride means being authentic and discovering oneself a little more every day.
Hoffman also spoke about the importance of feeling comfortable in one’s own skin and highlighted the organization’s commitment to supporting vulnerable members of the community.
“Our tagline is unity in our community, so we want to bring together a coalition of people who truly care about our most vulnerable communities and those who need help the most,” Hoffman said.
Jayden Jackson of the Hyacinth Foundation said Pride Month is not only a time for LGBTQ+ individuals to be seen, but also an opportunity to support one another.
Jackson explained that while Pride Month places many members of the LGBTQ+ community in the spotlight, there are still many who feel they must hide who they are or remain silent about their struggles. For that reason, Jackson emphasized the importance of standing together as a community.
“This is a time where we are able to encourage one another and make sure that we are able to advocate, be present, and be a voice for those who feel as though they have been unheard for so long,” Jackson said.
Jorge Cruz, Executive Director of LISC New Jersey, also spoke about Pride as an opportunity to uplift communities that have historically been marginalized.
Cruz explained that his organization focuses on creating social impact by investing resources into communities that have often been excluded from opportunities and support. While Pride Month is recognized annually, he said the work of supporting LGBTQ+ communities continues year-round.
He also highlighted the importance of hosting Pride-related events in sports and the impact they can have on fans and local communities.
“Sports have always been a powerful medium for bringing people together, and the World Cup is the largest platform in the world, so let’s use that platform for good,” Cruz said.
JoAnn McEniry of EDGE New Jersey reflected on the significance of hosting Pride events in sports, noting that not long ago LGBTQ+ individuals were often excluded from participating openly in athletics.
McEniry said that as society continues to evolve, sports organizations have a responsibility to create environments where everyone feels welcome. She added that recognizing the challenges LGBTQ+ athletes and fans have faced is essential to building greater representation and inclusion.
Inclusion and visibility remained the central themes throughout the evening, as speakers celebrated the progress that has been made while acknowledging the work that still lies ahead.
“Tonight matters more than just a Pride celebration, but it is really reflective of generations of struggle and fight to where we are today,” McEniry said.

Match Preview: Cosmos Travel to Face One Knoxville
The Cosmos return to USL League One play on the road as they travel to take on One Knoxville in the first meeting between the two clubs this season. The matchup presents another significant test for the Cosmos as they continue their climb through the league standings.
One Knoxville enters the match as one of the league’s top teams, currently sitting third in the USL League One table. Their strong start to the season has established them as a contender, making this one of the toughest road challenges the Cosmos have faced thus far.
The Cosmos enter the match looking to turn recent performances into points. Despite showing determination and flashes of quality throughout the season, the club has struggled to find results in recent weeks and enters the matchup seeking to snap a three-match losing streak. With the season beginning to reach its midpoint, every point becomes increasingly valuable in the race up the standings.
While the challenge is considerable, the Cosmos have continued to show resilience against strong opposition throughout the year. The squad will look to lean on that fighting spirit as they search for their first road victory of the season and another opportunity to prove themselves against one of the league’s top clubs.
Another storyline to watch is the USL League One Golden Boot race. Cosmos forward Ajmeer Spengler has been one of the league’s most dangerous attacking players throughout the season and enters the match with six goals. After spending time atop the scoring chart, Spengler now sits in second place and will look to continue his strong form as he chases the league’s leading scorer honor.
For the Cosmos, Saturday’s matchup is about more than just points. It is an opportunity to demonstrate growth, build confidence, and show that the club is capable of competing with the best teams in USL League One. A result on the road against one of the league’s top sides would provide a significant boost as the Cosmos continue their push up the standings.
